Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, October 11: The state-level karate competitions under ‘Khedan Watan Punjab Diyan 2026-27’, being organised by the Sports Department of the Punjab Government, commenced with great enthusiasm in Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (Mohali) today. Impressive performances in Gatka, gymnastics, Bhangra and karate added a special vibrancy to the inaugural ceremony.
On the first day of the competitions, around 500 female athletes from different districts of Punjab participated with great enthusiasm. Female athletes in the under-14, 21–30 years and 31–40 years age categories showcased their sporting talent, skills and competitive spirit.
Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh, Senior Deputy Mayor R.P. Sharma, Deputy Mayor Harpal Singh Channa, Kharar constituency in-charge Parminder Singh Goldy and Mohali Municipal Corporation councillor Gurpreet Kaur attended the inaugural ceremony.
On the occasion, Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh said that the Punjab Government was organising sporting events such as ‘Khedan Watan Punjab Diyan’ to promote sports culture, encourage young people to participate in sports and identify sporting talent across the state. He said that such events provide athletes with an appropriate platform to showcase their abilities and establish their identity at the district, state, national and international levels. He added that sports help develop qualities such as discipline, hard work, dedication and sportsmanship among young people, while also contributing significantly to their all-round personality development. He urged the female athletes to participate in sports with full dedication, hard work and discipline and bring pride to their parents, district and Punjab through their achievements.
Encouraging the female athletes, the speakers said that such sporting competitions provide young people with an important platform to hone their talent and advance in the field of sports. They said that young athletes today would play a significant role in further strengthening Punjab’s sporting identity at the national and international levels in the future.
Parminder Singh Goldy said that the main objective of initiatives such as ‘Khedan Watan Punjab Diyan’ was to identify sporting talent in villages and cities and provide athletes with a suitable platform to demonstrate their abilities. He encouraged the female athletes to participate in the competitions with hard work, dedication and sportsmanship.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, the chief guests honoured the female athletes, encouraged them and motivated them to achieve even greater milestones in the future.
District Sports Officer, Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, Umeshvari Sharma, was also present on the occasion.
