Chandigarh, 25 September, 2026: Punjab Engineering College (Deemed to be University), Chandigarh organised a tribute programme on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Prof. Satish Dhawan, remembering the life, contributions and indelible legacy of one of the institution’s most distinguished alumni and a leading figure in Indian science and technology. The programme was organised under the guidance of Prof. Rajesh Bhatia, with faculty members, guests, students and members of the PEC community participating.
The programme began with a welcome address, followed by a brief overview of the remarkable achievements and legacy of Prof. Satish Dhawan. After obtaining his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Punjab Engineering College in 1945, Prof. Dhawan went on to become one of the leading scientists of modern India. He is widely known as the “Father of Experimental Fluid Dynamics in India”. He served as Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) from 1972 to 1984 and provided visionary leadership during a crucial transformative phase of the Indian space programme.
The programme highlighted several significant contributions made under his leadership, including the launch of India’s first satellite, Aryabhata, in 1975 and the development of the SLV-3 rocket. These achievements subsequently played an important role in laying the foundation for space programmes such as INSAT and PSLV. His pioneering work in the field of Boundary Layer research and contributions to experimental fluid dynamics further strengthened his distinctive legacy in the field of scientific research. The Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota stands as a lasting tribute to his contribution to India’s space programme.
A documentary based on the life, achievements and journey of Prof. Satish Dhawan was also screened for the audience. Through the documentary, participants had the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of his remarkable career, scientific contributions, leadership capabilities and his association with Punjab Engineering College.
Following the documentary screening, an open interaction session was organised, in which faculty members, students, guests and those present were invited to share their thoughts, memories and experiences related to the personality of Prof. Satish Dhawan and his enduring contribution to Indian science and technology. This interactive session provided the PEC community an opportunity to reflect on his scientific excellence, leadership, humility and lasting legacy.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks to the dignitaries, faculty members, guests, students, organisers and all participants. On the occasion, all those present were also urged to express their respect and gratitude towards the great scientist, whose remarkable contributions and indelible legacy have enriched the nation.
The programme was organised as a meaningful tribute to Prof. Satish Dhawan and once again highlighted the enduring bond of Punjab Engineering College with its distinguished alumnus. His contributions to the field of science and technology continue to inspire generations of scientists, engineers and students.
