Mumbai:- The number of registered investors with the National Stock Exchange has crossed a major milestone. According to an official statement issued by the exchange, the total number of unique trading accounts, or client codes, crossed 25 crore (250 million) in February 2026.
Notably, the most recent one crore accounts have been added in just two months, indicating the rapid pace of increasing participation in the capital markets; the last 5 crore accounts, which are 20 per cent of the total, have been added in the last 16 months alone. The number of unique registered investors as of January 31, 2026 was 12.7 crore, while the total number of trading accounts is more than the number of unique investors due to investors having accounts with more than one broker.
According to state-wise data, Maharashtra leads with 4.2 crore (17 per cent) accounts, followed by Uttar Pradesh (2.8 crore), Gujarat (2.2 crore), and West Bengal and Rajasthan (1.4 crore each). The credit for this growth goes to rapid digitization, fintech revolution, low-cost trading platforms and a growing middle class.
In the last five years, Nifty 50 has given 11.3 per cent and Nifty 500 13.7 per cent annualized returns, which has increased domestic investors' confidence in equities. Between April 2025 and January 2026, about 6 crore new SIP accounts have been opened and the average monthly SIP investment has reached Rs 28,766 crore.
The share of individual investors in the market capitalization of NSE listed companies has increased to 18.6 per cent as of December 2025.
