Amritsar:- A 72-year-old woman received a new lease of life after undergoing complex skull-base surgery for a brain tumour at Livasa Hospital, Amritsar. The patient had a massive brain tumour, which was successfully removed.
The complex neurosurgical procedure was performed with the assistance of a microscope, successfully removing a giant olfactory groove meningioma measuring more than 6 centimetres.
The patient was admitted to Livasa Hospital with complaints of altered mental status, recurrent seizures, loss of the sense of smell and deteriorating vision. Investigations revealed a giant olfactory groove meningioma. This type of tumour is located at the base of the skull, near the frontal lobe of the brain. It lies close to structures that control the senses of smell and vision.
Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr. Amanjot Singh Boparai explained that an olfactory groove meningioma originates from the protective coverings of the brain and generally develops in the frontal and skull-base regions.
He added that, depending on the tumour’s size and location, patients may experience changes in their sense of smell, vision problems, seizures, headaches and altered consciousness. Surgery for a giant tumour is challenging because such tumours are located very close to critical nerve structures and blood vessels in the brain.
