Chandigarh:- A controversy over an event linked to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at Panjab University has intensified. Tensions escalated between student organisations opposing the ‘Seerat’ event and activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). According to reports, following slogan-shouting, a clash broke out between the two sides, prompting the university administration to intervene.
An RSS national secretary was scheduled to attend the ‘Seerat’ event, organised by the ABVP, as the chief guest. Even before the event began, several student organisations reached the venue to stage a protest and raised slogans against the RSS. During this, activists of PSU Lalkaar and ABVP came face to face, further escalating the controversy.
Administration Steps In Amid Rising Tensions
When the situation deteriorated, the university administration intervened to mediate. According to available information, ABVP students were kept inside the auditorium, while some students associated with PSU Lalkaar and other student organisations were taken into custody. However, clear details regarding the number of students detained or their subsequent release are not yet available.
Student Organisations Raise Questions at Press Conference
The following day, several student organisations held a press conference at the Panjab University Student Centre. They questioned the role of the university administration and demanded accountability for the alleged mistreatment they faced. The student organisations demanded that organisations such as the RSS should not be allowed to hold events at Panjab University in the future. They emphasised that the administration must clarify its position on allowing such events on the university campus. The situation will become clear only after the administration responds and decides on the next course of action.
