New Delhi, October 13: BJP National Spokesperson RP Singh today met with the Honorable Chief Minister of Delhi, Mrs. Rekha Gupta, and personally appealed for the compassionate release of Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar.
Singh stated that his appeal is based solely on humanitarian grounds, citing Bhullar's deteriorating mental health and nearly three decades of imprisonment. Bhullar has spent 28 years in prison and has been undergoing treatment for schizophrenia for over 14 years.
"The Supreme Court commuted his death sentence to life imprisonment in 2014, taking into account the inordinate delay and his fragile health," Singh said. He also pointed out that despite the central government's 2019 directive supporting remission of his sentence, Bhullar remains in prison.
Singh said the Delhi Sentence Review Board has repeatedly denied Bhullar's release, but the circumstances now warrant reconsideration on grounds of compassion and human dignity.
The BJP national spokesperson said, "This is not a case of the crime for which he has already served a long sentence, but of compassion and humane treatment of a mentally ill person." He urged the Chief Minister to intervene and grant this long-pending relief on humanitarian grounds.
