Amritsar:- Amritsar Commissionerate Police arrested absconding accused Akashdeep Singh alias Akash, a resident of Qadian, after he was injured in an exchange of fire with a police team during an operation on Ram Tirath Road. He has been admitted to a hospital for treatment.

Police Commissioner Harmanbir Singh Gill, while inspecting the spot, said that when the police team signalled the accused to stop today, he opened fire at the police personnel instead of stopping. The police had also warned him to surrender, but after he fired at the police team, the personnel retaliated in self-defence. During the exchange of fire, the accused sustained a bullet injury in his leg. He was subsequently admitted to a hospital for treatment.

He said that the police recovered a .30-bore pistol, two fired cartridges, three live cartridges and an Activa scooter from the spot. The documents of the scooter are being verified, and further investigation into the case is underway.

The Police Commissioner said that, according to the preliminary investigation, seven criminal cases have been registered against the accused at various police stations, and he was also wanted in one case. The investigation has revealed that Akash, along with four other associates, had allegedly robbed a money exchange shop in Batala at gunpoint and looted approximately Rs 2.5 lakh. The identities of his four other associates involved in the incident have been established, and efforts are underway to trace them.

He further said that it had also come to light that the accused and his associates were planning to help criminal Angrez Singh alias Chhotu escape from police custody. Around 15 cases have been registered against Chhotu, who is currently lodged in jail.
