Chandigarh:- A teenager suffering from severe gastrointestinal bleeding received a new lease of life after successful treatment at Max Hospital, Mohali. Seventeen-year-old Aman’s condition was further complicated by anemia, abnormal blood clotting and abnormal liver-function parameters. He required intensive monitoring and multiple blood transfusions.

He had been suffering from fever for 10–12 days, along with poor appetite and reduced food intake. Later, his eyes developed a yellowish discoloration and his urine became dark. Subsequently, he began passing fresh blood repeatedly in his stools.

Despite intensive medical management and multiple blood transfusions, his hemoglobin continued to fall and reached dangerously low levels. A colonoscopy revealed multiple ulcers in the lower part of the small intestine and the surrounding bowel, but the actual source of bleeding could not be identified.

Led by Dr. Amandeep Singh Sandhu, Associate Director–GI, MAS and Bariatric Surgery, a multidisciplinary medical team at Max Hospital performed a specialised procedure—exploratory laparotomy with on-table enteroscopy—to identify and control the source of bleeding.

To stop the bleeding and stabilise the patient’s condition, Max surgeons removed approximately 200 centimetres of diseased intestine along with a portion of the large intestine. A temporary route was then created to allow waste to leave the body, giving the intestine time to heal.

With continued multidisciplinary care, the teenager gradually improved and was discharged from the hospital in a stable condition after six days.
