Chandigarh, October 6, 2025– Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Vijaypal Singh issued a strong statement against the allegations raised by Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during the Municipal Corporation meeting. He stated that the letter sent by the Mayor to the Punjab Governor and UT Administrator is unconstitutional and beyond her authority. Singh described the letter as a tactic to suppress opposition councillors and cover up the BJP’s corruption.
Vijaypal Singh explained that during the General House meeting on September 30, AAP and Congress councillors raised significant issues concerning city residents, including broken roads, delays in development projects, and a lack of transparency. He emphasized that raising such questions is the democratic duty of elected representatives. In response, the Mayor claimed that her authority was misused and used marshals to curb the democratic rights of opposition councillors — “Whenever the Mayor feels threatened, she puts marshals forward.” Following this, she wrote a letter to the Governor/Administrator demanding immediate action, which exceeds her constitutional powers.
AAP clarified that funds allocated for road construction are being misused, while the roads remain unbuilt. The party aims to fully renovate V3, V5, and V6 roads, but the BJP Mayor is obstructing these projects, causing development to stall. Additionally, in an attempt to expedite the auction of land in Manimajra, unauthorized and unconstitutional methods have been adopted, raising suspicions of foul play. AAP councillors have opposed these efforts and irregularities in projects like community centers and parking lots in the interest of the public.
The party also expressed concern over misleading and false details being recorded in the official minutes prepared by the Mayor’s office. AAP has demanded the release of all audio and video recordings to bring the actual sequence of events before the public. Singh clarified that the letter sent to the Governor/Administrator holds no legal authority to initiate action against any councillor; any such action would be unconstitutional, against the rules, and biased.
AAP challenged Mayor Babla to prove her allegations, stating that if she fails to do so, she should publicly apologize and resign on moral grounds. The party reiterated its demand for an independent, impartial, and time-bound investigation, warning that all legal options would be pursued if the investigation finds wrongdoing.
Vijaypal Singh assured the public that raising questions is not a crime but a duty of elected representatives. He reiterated that AAP is committed to transparency, democracy, and citizen welfare and will expose any attempts to undermine these values.
