Dera Bassi, September 5:- Due to heavy rainfall in the hilly areas, the water level of the Ghaggar River rose significantly, causing damage to the left embankment near village Bhankarpur in District SAS Nagar (Mohali) in the recent days. The repair work is being carried out on a war footing by the Water Resources-cum-Mining and Geology Department, Mohali.
Divulging the details, Executive Engineer of the Department, Mr Khushwinder Singh, informed that on September 1, 2025, the water discharge in the Ghaggar River was recorded at around 50,000 cusecs, which increased to nearly 1,00,000 cusecs by September 3, 2025, due to continuous rainfall.
The heavy flow of water led to erosion at RD 10180M on the left embankment at Bhankarpur village, causing damage to the stone pitching. The erosion currently stretches to about 400 feet in length.
He further stated that the strengthening and repair work is being executed with full cooperation from the residents of Bhankharpur village along with the Department. Essential materials, including EC bags and wire crates, are being deployed on priority, and the required machinery and resources are available with the Department.
He added that Deputy Commissioner Ms. Komal Mittal had visited the site two days ago and assured the villagers that the district administration and the department would ensure the embankment is fully strengthened. The work is progressing rapidly with the active support of locals.
