Chandigarh- The revived Shiromani Akali Dal President Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh wrote a letter to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In his letter, Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh gave special reference to the contribution made by Punjab in the progress of the country.
Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh said that Punjab has been completely affected by the flood today. Giani Harpreet Singh presented the government figures and apprised the Center about the conditions of Punjab. Presenting the figures, Giani Harpreet Singh informed that,
*Number of villages affected - 1655
*Number of people affected - more than 3 lakh 55 thousand
*Number of deaths - 37
*Agricultural area affected - more than 4 lakh 38 thousand acres.
He said that these figures are as on late evening of September 3, when the damage figure has increased further in the following days.
In his letter, Giani Harpreet Singh made a huge financial demand from the Center. He said that, in view of this serious situation, we appeal to your government to provide immediate assistance to Punjab through the following measures:
1 Immediate relief package: Immediate financial assistance for flood-affected families, items for daily life needs, temporary accommodation facilities.
2. Compensation under agriculture: Full compensation for crops destroyed by floods, full compensation for houses of workers and daily subsistence allowance, full compensation for damaged agricultural machinery, tubewells and loss of livestock. In addition, 100 percent subsidy should be given on diesel per acre required for lifting soil filled in the fields and repopulating the fields after the flood waters dry up and seeds and fertilizers should be provided free of cost for the next crop.
3. Demand for funds for public services: Funds for the repair of broken roads, schools, bridges, electricity, water supply and health services. In addition, demand for appropriate steps to be taken for the restoration of grain markets.
4. Deployment of Central Relief Force: Need for further acceleration in relief, rescue work, supply of medicines and essential goods by NDRF and army units.
5. Demand for flood management: Plan to strengthen and strengthen the banks of rivers, build flood control structures and establish a permanent flood fund.
6. Demand for debt relief: Loans of debt-ridden farmers, laborers and small traders of flood-affected areas should be waived.
7. Health assistance: Central health teams and free medicines to prevent post-flood diseases.
8. Despite being a republic, 75% of our water was given to other states without any royalty, which is a direct plunder of the state's resources. We were getting money till PEPSU, that should be given along with the arrears so that we can manage it ourselves from now on.
9. Due to the state's greater powers, the management of BBMB and other dams should be given to Punjab immediately. If this had happened, then such losses might not have occurred.
10. After the flood, a high-level committee should be formed to make sure arrangements to avoid floods.
11. Similar damage was done in the year 2023. Even then, full compensation for crops and houses etc. was not received. Therefore, what is to be given to Punjab should be communicated to the people of Punjab through the media.
Giani Harpreet Singh expressed full hope that the central government, looking at the current situation in Punjab, will soon take care of Punjab by giving a big economic package.
