They said that this unauthorized four-storey building with about 50 flats collapsed on a vacant house in Vijay Nagar in Virar area at 12:05 am on Tuesday night.
According to eyewitnesses, a one-year-old girl's birthday was being celebrated on the fourth floor when 12 flats in a part of the building collapsed, due to which the people living in the flats and guests were buried in the debris.
Palghar District Magistrate Dr. Indu Rani Jakhar confirmed on Thursday morning that the death toll in the incident has risen to 17. He said that the NDRF and other rescue teams will continue to remove debris to ensure that no other people are trapped in the debris.
