New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday sought response from the Delhi Police on the bail pleas of activists Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, Gulfisha Fatima and Miran Haider in a UAPA case related to the conspiracy charges behind the February 2020 Delhi riots.
A bench of Justices Arvind Kumar and NV Anjaria issued notice and listed the matter for October 7. The activists have challenged the Delhi High Court's September 2 order, in which the bail of nine people, including Khalid and Imam, was cancelled. The court had said that citizens cannot be allowed to indulge in "conspiratorial" violence under the guise of demonstrations or protests.
Apart from Khalid and Imam, the bail of Fatima, Haider, Mohammad Salim Khan, Shifa ur Rehman, Athar Khan, Abdul Khalid Saifi and Shadab Ahmed was also cancelled. The bail plea of ??another accused, Taslim Ahmed, was also rejected by a separate High Court bench on September 2. The High Court said that the Constitution gives citizens the right to demonstrate and protest, provided they are orderly, peaceful and unarmed and such actions should be within the ambit of law.
