
Election Commission of India releases informative booklet on Vice Presidential Election 2025;

Giving this information, Haryana Chief Electoral Officer A Srinivas said that this booklet is an important effort of the Commission to explain the election process in simple language.
He said that the Election Commission of India is continuously innovating to make the process of elections to state assemblies, Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha or the President and Vice President transparent and simple. In this series, the Commission has published this booklet, which contains brief historical notes on all the 16 Vice Presidential elections held from 1952 to 2022.
The Chief Electoral Officer said that under Article 324 of the Constitution of India, the Election Commission of India is responsible for conducting elections to the post of Vice President. Also, under Article 68(2), in case of death, resignation, removal from office or any other cause, the election must be held as soon as possible. The person elected serves a term of five years from the date of assuming office under Article 67.
He said that the election to the post of Vice President is conducted under the President and Vice President Election Act, 1952 and the President and Vice President Election Rules, 1974. These elections are generally different from direct elections like those to Lok Sabha or State Legislative Assemblies, as it has special rules regarding the nature of the voters, eligibility of candidates, electoral system, counting of votes and legal arrangements.
Shri Srinivas said that in this book, all the important information related to the Vice Presidential election like constitutional provisions, composition of voters, eligibility of candidates, nomination process, election program, appointment of returning and assistant returning officers, determination of polling stations, election system, method of counting of votes and resolution of election related disputes has been explained in simple language. He said that this book has also been made available on the official website of the Election Commission of India https://www.eci.gov.in, so that maximum citizens can take advantage of it.
