Haryana/Hisar: Is Haryana Central University (HAU) no longer a temple of learning but a den of fear and oppression? Rajya Sabha MP Randeep Singh Surjewala has written a sensational letter to the Hon'ble Governor, Haryana expressing grave concern over the "barbaric attacks" on students in the university and withdrawal of scholarships from thousands of poor students. He has alleged that the university administration, particularly the Vice Chancellor's office, is directly involved in this "tyranny".
Surjewala has said in his scathing letter that HAU, which was once a centre of knowledge, has now been "horrifically distorted". He has described the sudden exclusion of 233 students from the university's scholarship programme as a "cruel fatal blow", especially to those students who come from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Backward Classes. "This is a living proof of the vindictive and arbitrary behaviour of the vice-chancellor," he alleged.
The letter paints a grim picture of a "dark age" within the university:
* Attack on scholarships: A circular issued by the HAU administration on May 13, 2025 took away scholarships of around 233 students of postgraduate and doctoral courses. Surjewala termed the action as "vindictive" and causing "serious damage" to the image of the university. "This is a direct attack on the future of poor students!" he said.
* The 'black night' of June 10: The university allegedly entered a "dark chapter" on June 10, 2025, when officials like the security officer, dean welfare and CSUO brutally attacked students, thrashed them and even led to a student being hospitalised with serious internal injuries. "This is the height of hooliganism," Surjewala expressed outrage.
* Administrative chaos: The letter reveals widespread mismanagement, misappropriation of funds and favouritism within the university. It alleges that appointments of teachers, staff and registrars are being made without any due process. Even more shocking is the allegation that the Vice Chancellor's wife and his family members are making "unacceptable interference" in the administrative affairs of the university.
* Freedom being throttled: Surjewala alleged that the university administration, at the behest of the Vice Chancellor, is constantly harassing students who raise their voice for their rights. Students are facing fabricated cases and disciplinary action, and are being forced to appear before the police "without any reason".
MP Surjewala has urged the Hon'ble Governor to take immediate notice of this "chaos" and order a fair inquiry. He has demanded that all responsible persons be brought to book and the temple of learning at HAU be revived, where students can feel safe and academic excellence can flourish.
Surjewala said, "Haryana Central University should be a symbol of democracy, autonomy and rule of law, not tyranny and arbitrariness!"
Background:
Haryana Central University has been in the news in recent times over changes in its scholarship programmes and alleged administrative irregularities, leading to widespread concern among the student community and academic circles.
