Ludhiana 05 May 2025- The Department of Animal Nutrition at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana organized a five-day hands-on training program on “Nutritional Technologies for Dairy Farmers”, under the guidance of the Directorate of Extension Education.
During valedictory function, Dr. R.S. Grewal, Director of Extension Education, emphasized that feed constitutes over 65% of the total cost in dairy farming. He revealed that the adoption of modern nutritional technologies can significantly reduce feeding costs, making dairy farming a profitable and sustainable enterprise. “These innovations not only enhance productivity but also open avenues for rural youth employment and support agricultural diversification,” he added.
Dr. J.S. Hundal, HoD of Animal Nutrition and Course Director, shared that the training featured lectures and practical demonstrations by departmental experts. The primary aim was to promote year-round balanced feeding using locally available feed resources. The program highlighted the use of Mineral mixtures, Urea molasses mineral blocks, and Bypass nutrients. Participants were also trained in fodder conservation techniques such as silage and hay making to ensure continuous fodder availability.
It is worth mentioning that the department has developed several nutrition-based technologies and offers species-specific as well as area-specific mineral mixtures tailored to the nutritional needs of animals across Punjab. Dr. Grewal encouraged farmers to consult the department for balanced feed formulations or to test commercial feeds.
Course coordinators Dr. JS Lamba, Dr. Udeybir and Dr. S. Uniyal welcomed farmers’ enthusiastic participation, noting their keen interest in learning modern nutritional strategies to improve dairy productivity.
