Nawanshahr- In an inspiring initiative aimed at combating the bone-chilling cold this year, the District Administration, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, in collaboration with the Red Cross Society, took a progressive step to reduce the impact of the cold. Under the leadership of Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Dhiman, the District Administration purchased branded and good quality warm jackets and sturdy sports shoes for the economically weaker sections of the district. As part of the scheme, 250 pairs of such jackets and shoes were purchased, which were distributed to the needy persons in the district.
According to the Deputy Commissioner, if a person is without a proper jacket and proper shoes, then that person is truly poor to meet the basic need to survive this extreme cold. Thus, the District Administration identified more than 250 such people to help by going around the respective sub-divisions. Deputy Commissioner-cum-President District Red Cross Society Rajesh Dhiman and Sub-Divisional Magistrate Nawanshahr-cum-Honorary Secretary District Red Cross Society Dr Akshita Gupta, who were personally involved in the success of this project, shared their experiences of these activities.
Dr Akshita Gupta said, “This time of the first half of the month of January was the best time to provide warm jackets and shoes to the needy people and we were moving forward to identify such people. The smiles on the faces of these people were telling a lot about their situation and their happiness. There was a unique glow in their eyes with the feeling of warmth. I thank DC Sahib and the Red Cross Society for such an initiative.”
Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Dhiman said, "Humanitarian efforts are the most important part of our service, we can contribute a lot to such needy people. The smile on their faces is so touching that it cannot be described. We hope to reach out to everyone with new initiatives." Similarly, Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Dhiman, in collaboration with the Red Cross Society of District Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, took a new initiative to provide warmth in the cold by setting up a tea langar outside the District Administrative Complex for a whole week.
From 8 am to 12 noon, the District Administration came forward to serve hot ginger tea and biscuits to the passers-by and people visiting the DC office in the cold. Around 1000 cups of tea were served daily during the entire week of cold.
