While reviewing the progress of activities undertaken by the Water Resources Department (Drainage-cum-Mining & Geology Division SAS Nagar) at District Administrative Complex, SAS Nagar, Mohali on Wednesday, she directed the officers of the department to expedite the process of digging ponds in the already identified area at Sarangpur, Handesra and Sarangpur (both near Tangri river), Antala Drain, Rajapur Khela, Bahora (along river Ghaggar), Bijanpur, Rani Mazra etc in Derabassi.
He said that these water harvesting-cum-storage ponds will be created by constructing check dams to prevent seepage of flood water which will be helpful in recharging as well as protecting the area from floods. Besides, to keep drains and rivers free from disposal of various liquid waste, the concerned departments have been asked to stop seepage/drainage within the stipulated time frame.
About 46 such points have been identified by PPCB and Drainage Department in the district and notices have been issued to the departments to take action on priority basis and submit the report. Similarly, to identify the drains falling in private land, 21 such drains have been notified, while the remaining 21 will be notified in the coming days, so that the natural flow of rainwater can be ensured.
While taking stock of flood protection works in the district, Deputy Commissioner Jain informed that a total of 36 strengthening works have been completed on choa, rainy ditches, drains and Ghaggar river, Jhirmal river, Tangri river, Patiala ki Rao, Jayanti Devi ki Rao etc. in the district at a cost of about Rs 627.24 lakh under non-plan, State Disaster Management Fund and MNREGA, so that the fields and population can be saved from flood water.
ADC (J) Viraj S Tidke, SDM Amit Gupta, SDM Gurmander Singh, DRO Aman Chawla, District Drainage-cum-Mining and Geology Officer Gurtej Singh, Tehsildar Arjun Singh Grewal were present in the meeting.
