The Supreme Court has stayed his arrest. The Supreme Court has said in the order that no punitive action should be taken against the petitioner. Chahal has also been asked to cooperate fully in the investigation.
Along with this, a response has been sought from the Punjab government within four weeks. An arrest warrant was issued against him by the Patiala court on October 25. In the petition filed by Chahal's lawyer in the Supreme Court, it was said that 76-year-old Chahal is suffering from several diseases. They are also ready to cooperate in the investigation. However, the Punjab and Haryana High Court rejected the bail plea on October 4.
The court, meanwhile, had said that the court should not rush before granting anticipatory bail, as it could cause serious damage to the state's economy and adversely affect public confidence. Justice Sindhu had clarified that "since the charges leveled against Chahal are very serious, it is necessary to conduct an impartial investigation into the matter and granting him anticipatory bail may affect the investigation."
