Patiala, December 6 - The hunger strike of Balwant Singh Rajoana, who was sentenced to death in the murder case of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh and has been in jail for the past 27 years, continued for the second day today. He has been surviving only on water for two days. Attempts by the prison authorities to persuade him failed. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee had appealed to the President to change Rajoana's death sentence to life imprisonment 11 years ago, but no decision has been taken on it yet, which is why he is still in jail. Although the jail authorities have arranged to talk to Rajoana's family over the phone regarding her health, her sister Kamaldeep Kaur has demanded that she be allowed to meet her brother on any day other than Tuesday. The jail officials have said to talk to the higher authorities about this. It is also worth mentioning here that on the 550th Prakash Purab of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, a notification was issued regarding the release of the detained Singhs and the commutation of Rajoana's sentence to life imprisonment, but that too has not been implemented yet.
