Ignoring dental treatments comes at a cost - Dr A K Das.
Mohali- Despite the rapid development of medical science, oral health remains one of the most neglected aspects of overall health. In India, surveys show that more than 70% of adults suffer from dental problems, yet very few of them get timely treatment.

Most people visit a dentist only when the pain becomes unbearable. Cavities, gum disease or tooth sensitivity are often ignored as "minor" problems, but if ignored, they can lead to serious complications. Untreated dental infections can spread to other parts of the body, causing serious diseases like heart disease, diabetes complications and even premature birth in pregnant women.
Another common misconception is that professional dental treatment is unnecessary if one brushes daily. Although oral hygiene at home is important, it cannot replace preventive dental checkups, professional cleanings, and timely interventions. Many diseases such as oral cancer, gum disease, and jaw diseases can be detected early through regular dental checkups.
This ignorance is also financially costly. Neglecting a simple filling today can lead to the need for a root canal or tooth extraction tomorrow—these procedures are more expensive, complicated, and painful. Prevention is not only better but also much cheaper than cure.
Raising awareness is the need of the hour. Schools, communities, and healthcare providers must emphasize the importance of dental health as an integral part of overall health. Public dental education campaigns, affordable treatment plans, and regular dental camps can fill this gap.
In the words of dental experts: “Healthy teeth are not a luxury—they are a necessity.” Neglecting dental care today does not just mean losing teeth tomorrow; it is about putting one’s overall health, confidence, and quality of life at risk.
