Mumbai, July 15 - Elon Musk-owned Tesla has entered India. The electric vehicle maker has opened its first showroom in Mumbai. The showroom was inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Tesla will sell Model Y cars in India, the price of which starts at $ 69,770.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that Maharashtra wants to see Tesla set up its research and development and manufacturing facilities in India. Fadnavis was speaking at the inauguration of Tesla's first showroom in India at the Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai.
He said that Mumbai is not only the financial, commercial and entertainment capital of India, but also an entrepreneurial hub. Tesla India last month leased 24,565 sq ft of warehousing space in Mumbai's Lodha Logistics Park for a period of five years.
Tesla will initially offer two variants of the Model Y in India. The rear-wheel drive model is priced at 60.1 lakh ($70,000) and the long-range variant is priced at 67.8 lakh ($79,000). These prices are significantly higher than in other markets.
The same vehicle starts at 38.6 lakh ($44,990) in the US, 30.5 lakh ($36,700) (263,500 yuan) in China and 46 lakh ($53,700) (€45,970) in Germany. The price difference is mainly due to the heavy import tax imposed by India.
