New Delhi, July 3 - Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday took a dig at the central and state governments over farmer suicides in Maharashtra, saying that the government is silent about these suicides and apathy is being seen. He claimed that this 'system' is killing farmers, but the Prime Minister is watching the spectacle of his 'PR'.
Rahul Gandhi said in a post on X, "Think... 767 farmers committed suicide in Maharashtra in just three months. Is this just a statistic? No. These are 767 destroyed houses. 767 families who will never be able to stand on their feet. And the government is silent. It is watching with apathy."
Gandhi claimed, "Farmers are sinking into debt every day - seeds are expensive, fertilizers are expensive, diesel is expensive... but there is no guarantee of MSP. When they demand loan waiver, they are ignored,” the Congress leader said, “But those who have crores of rupees? The Modi government easily waives their loans. Look at today’s news – Anil Ambani’s Rs 48,000 crore SBI ‘fraud’.”
Targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said, “Modi ji had said that he would double the farmer’s income – but today the situation is such that the life of the food grains provider is being halved.” Gandhi said, “This system is killing farmers – silently, but continuously… and Modi ji is watching the spectacle of his PR.”
Meanwhile, BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya hit back at Rahul Gandhi and shared a chart on ‘X’ claiming that 55,928 farmers committed suicide in Maharashtra during the 15-year tenure of the Nationalist Congress Party-Congress government.
