Moscow, June 27 - India, one of the main buyers of Russian thermal coal, has increased its imports from Russia to a two-year high in May 2025.
Citing a business review by the Russian Center for Price Index (CCI), Kommersant reported that thermal coal supplies from Russia to India in May 2025 increased by 52 percent compared to April to 1.3 million metric tons, a two-year high. Records show that since June 2023, monthly exports from Russia had not exceeded 1 million tons.
Russia’s market share in India is unlikely to increase significantly due to growing domestic production and high cost of logistics. According to experts, it is entirely possible to maintain the current shipment levels.
The report, citing Bigmint data, said that India's total thermal coal imports in May increased by 10 percent month-on-month in seasonally adjusted terms to 17.4 million tonnes, the highest level since June 2024.
