Nawanshahr - District Magistrate Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar Navjot Pal Singh Randhawa using the powers under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 (Act-2 of 1974)
Under Section 3 of the Punjab Village and Small Town Patrol Act, 1918, orders have been issued to the Panchayats to keep a regular watch in the villages of the Sutlej River and the islands adjacent to the Sutlej River within the limits of District Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar. According to the issued orders, the district development and panchayat officers will be responsible for implementing these orders through the respective panchayats of the villages of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar Bet. Similarly, the Patwari/Kanungo belonging to the villages of the Bet area adjacent to the river Sutlej shall send a daily report about the condition of the river Sutlej to the concerned Tehsildar and the Tehsildar shall be responsible for sending his report to the DC Office (DRA Branch) daily. Apart from this, the Executive Engineer Drainage, Range Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur will be responsible for sending the daily report to the DC office about the water status/level of Sutlej river under his jurisdiction. These orders will remain in force till 19 August 2024.
 The issued orders said that as the rainy season has started and during this season the water in the Sutlej and in the canals/ drains rises and the flow becomes faster. In this way, there is always a danger of the dams of rivers and canals breaking. A bun break causes a lot of loss of life and property. Apart from this, people's crops are destroyed. Some mischievous people are also keen to damage the banns and some people do not stop taking sand from the river Sutlej through trolleys/trucks even during the rainy season. Frequent movement of trolleys/trucks over the bun increases the chances of weakening of the bun and may lead to an accident with the trolley/truck. In order to avoid any incidents, it is necessary to keep a proper vigil in and around the river Sutlej during the rainy season.
