With the contribution of its more than 860 life members and 13 patron members and the support of the district residents on a large scale, Red Cross Society Una has not only provided financial assistance to the needy, but also played a leading role in social welfare and upliftment. Along with this, the organization is also playing an active role in bringing the drug-addicted youth on the right path.
District Red Cross Society Una becomes an economic support for the needy
Secretary and Credit Planning Officer of District Red Cross Society Una, Sanjay Sankhyan, says that the organization has become an economic support for many needy families of the district.
In the last one and a half years, the organization has given financial help of about 30 lakhs to 115 people for treatment, education, sports and other necessary materials. This help was given to poor families deprived of the government's Himcare or Sahara schemes. Along with this, financial help of about 8 lakhs has been provided for higher education of 41 girl students and about 36 lakhs for the marriage of 169 girls from eligible poor families.
Concrete efforts towards empowerment of the disabled
From time to time, evaluation camps are also being organized by the District Red Cross Organization under the joint aegis of Artificial Limb Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO) for the convenience of the disabled and senior citizens so that the disabled can live their lives with ease and respect.
He informed that motorized tricycles, wheel chairs, artificial limbs and other assistive devices worth Rs. 25.50 lakh were distributed to 155 Divyangjans on the basis of their disability assessment in the assessment camps held in the sub-divisions of Una, Haroli, Amb, Bangana and Gagret of the district.
Along with this, a canteen has been built in the Deputy Commissioner's office complex for the self-reliance of the Divyang persons, in which 5 Divyangs have been made self-reliant through self-employment. One lakh rupees were made available through the Block Development Officer for the repair of the canteen.
Samarthya program became a ray of hope for the people
'Samarthya' is an innovative program born from the vision of Deputy Commissioner Una Jatin Lal, which is being run by the administration through the District Red Cross Society in collaboration with industrial units under Corporate Social Responsibility. Its objective is to support needy girl students and women in the field of education, health, skill and economic self-reliance.
Under this program, financial assistance is given to those girl students of Una district whose father is not alive or who are physically handicapped (60 percent earlier, now 40 percent). Eligible girl students are given assistance ranging from Rs 25 thousand to Rs 2 lakh for higher education, coaching for competitive exams, medical education and vocational training.
In this, apart from financial assistance for any degree, diploma or any other professional course after 12th, financial assistance is also provided for coaching for exams like UPSC, NEET, Army.
In this program, provision has also been made to encourage sewing, digital literacy, self-help groups, women entrepreneurship for women with a view to women empowerment. At the same time, health camps, blood donation campaigns and de-addiction campaigns are also being run under this program with the aim of making the society aware.
Along with this, about Rs 1.20 lakh has been spent to provide books for competitive exams and facilities of computers, printer and Wi-Fi in the District Library Una. In order to provide a comfortable environment to the children, the facility of air conditioner has been provided in Swami Vivekanand Library Haroli so that the children can get a good environment. Apart from this, various voluntary organizations including Prem Ashram and Aashray Parodha were given Rs. 21,000 each as incentive for the education of deaf and dumb children and care of the elderly.
Leading role in disaster relief and social service works
Shri Sankhyan said that District Red Cross Society Una is also playing a leading role in providing help and honour to disaster victims and social workers. The organization sent material worth about Rs. 2 lakh to provide relief to the families affected by the recent disaster in Mandi. 121 EPE sheets and food items were distributed to the migrant labourers who became homeless due to fire in the slums of Basal and Mawa Kaholan in Una district.
An amount of Rs. 80,625 was made available to 19 Aapda Mitras and NCC cadets deployed there so that the devotees visiting Maidi fair do not face any kind of problem. Along with this, wheel chair facility has been made available on the ground floor of Mini Secretariat Una so that the elderly and handicapped people coming to the Secretariat for work do not face any kind of inconvenience.
Blankets, utensils and hygiene kits have been provided to 120 needy persons including cleaning colleagues in the district through the organization. Apart from this, the help of Vidyarthi Samaj Seva Sabha and Gunjan Sanstha was taken for wide publicity of the drug-free campaign.
A reward of 25 thousand will be given for helping the injured in a road accident
The district administration has taken another inspiring step on the initiative of the Deputy Commissioner. Under this, now the person helping the injured in a road accident will be awarded a cash prize of 25 thousand rupees. This award will be given through the Red Cross Society. The objective of this initiative is to encourage people to immediately help the injured in accidents, so that as many precious lives as possible can be saved by getting timely treatment.
Encouragement to meritorious students
He told that efforts have been made by the Red Cross Society Una to encourage the children who perform best in class 10th and 12th. In the last academic session, 4 children of government schools of the district who were in the state merit were honored by giving incentive money.

He said that Red Cross is working with commitment to provide support to the lives of people suffering from natural disaster, disease, disability, poverty and social neglect.
The organization also organizes blood donation camps at the district level to distribute fruit plants for environmental protection and to encourage youth to donate blood so that precious lives can be saved when needed.
