Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, 25 September, 2026:- Under the leadership of Punjab Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Singh Mann, the district administration and police are intensifying anti-drug activities to make the efforts being undertaken by the Punjab Government for complete eradication of drugs more effective at the grassroots level. In this regard, during a meeting held at the District Administrative Complex, Deputy Commissioner Smt. Komal Mittal and SSP S. Varun Sharma reviewed the efforts being undertaken by various departments for prevention of drug abuse and stressed on further strengthening the ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ campaign up to the village level.
SSP S. Varun Sharma said that under the leadership of Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Punjab Government is working at multiple levels to protect youth from drugs and curb the drug trade. He said that complete eradication of drugs is not only the responsibility of government departments but also a collective responsibility of every section of society. Therefore, there is a need for the administration, police, panchayats, social organisations, youth and the general public to work together. He directed the officials to maintain regular contact with the coordinators of the ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ campaign in their respective areas. He said that Village Defence Committees should be formed soon in villages where they have not yet been constituted, while the committees already formed should be verified and WhatsApp groups should be created for better coordination, so that activities being undertaken for the eradication of drugs can be carried out in a more systematic manner.
He said that anti-drug activities would be reviewed regularly so that any shortcomings could be addressed in time. He directed the officials to undertake maximum efforts not only for prevention of drug abuse but also to create awareness among youth about the harmful effects of drugs and connect them with more constructive activities.
The Deputy Commissioner said that Village Defence Committees can serve as an important link at the village level in the eradication of drugs. These committees can contribute to preventing drug abuse in their villages, creating awareness among youth, informing the concerned officials about suspicious activities and mobilising people against drugs. She appealed to the committees to perform their role more actively.
SSP S. Varun Sharma said that the police are continuously taking action to prevent the supply and trafficking of drugs. He said that strict action as per law is being taken against persons involved in drug-related activities. He said that better coordination between the police and the general public can make drug prevention more effective.
He appealed to the Village Defence Committees to immediately inform the police about any suspicious activity related to drugs in their respective villages. He said that the ongoing campaign against drugs can be further strengthened only through active public participation.
During the meeting, services related to de-addiction and rehabilitation, awareness activities and the efforts being undertaken by various departments for prevention of drug abuse were also reviewed. The officials were directed to work in coordination with each other to make the anti-drug campaign more effective.
The Deputy Commissioner and SSP appealed to the residents of the district to actively cooperate with the efforts being undertaken by the Punjab Government under the leadership of Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Singh Mann for eradication of drugs. They directed the Civil Surgeon to create awareness among people about the harmful effects of drugs through persons who have given up drug addiction. They said that through the joint efforts of the administration, police and the public, effective progress can be made towards keeping the younger generation away from drugs and creating a drug-free society.
