Patiala (Kaka Ram Verma):- The United Nations is observing the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam as World’s Best Students Day. To mark the occasion, Shri Kaka Ram Verma, Chief Trainer of the First Aid Safety Health Awareness Mission, and Shri Harinder Singh Karir, Assistant Commissioner of the Bhai Ghanhaiya Ji Ambulance Brigade, organised inter-school quiz competitions on first aid, CPR, fire safety, road safety, and the harmful effects of drugs, crimes and other wrongdoings.
Welcoming the participants, Principal Sarla Bhatnagar and Dr Rakesh Verma, president of the Dedicated Brothers Group, said that Dr Kalam had made outstanding and commendable contributions to the security, honour and progress of Mother India. They said that by making students aware of his achievements, children could be nurtured into healthy and patriotic citizens, but this mission required efforts on a war footing. Instead of accepting scholarships worth millions of dollars offered by the US government, Dr Kalam worked relentlessly to develop missiles and satellites for India’s progress, security and prosperity.
On July 27, Dr Kalam suffered a cardiac arrest in Shillong. Had students, teachers and police commandos provided first aid and CPR at that time, he might have been saved. During the competitions, Shri Kaka Ram Verma, Harinder Singh Karir, Jarnail Singh and Hardeep Kaur asked questions to students from two participating teams and explained the answers. They encouraged the children to become helping angels who could prevent accidents, avert incidents involving electricity, gas, petroleum products, chemicals and fires at homes, control such emergencies and rescue victims.
Programme coordinator and NCC Officer Sachna Sharma said that teams from 15 schools participated in the competitions. In both the junior and senior groups, the teams from Veer Haqiqat Rai School secured first place. Atma Ram Kumar Sabha and Arya Kanya School teams secured second place, while the teams from Soni Public School, B.N. Khalsa School and Arya High School secured third place.
In recognition of winning the highest number of prizes, Veer Haqiqat Rai Model School was honoured with a rolling trophy presented by Ravinder Kaur Sidhu in memory of her brother, Paramjit Singh Sarao, former Inspector General.
