Mohali (Jagmeet Ghuman), October 16:- Doctors at Max Hospital, Mohali, have successfully treated a 56-year-old woman who had been suffering from severe urinary incontinence and persistent urine leakage for nearly six months.

The patient was diagnosed with a vesicovaginal fistula, an abnormal opening connecting the urinary bladder and the vagina. This condition caused continuous urine leakage, leaving the woman unable to control her bladder and severely affecting her daily life. The fistula had developed due to an accidental injury to the urinary bladder during a procedure performed at another medical centre three months earlier to treat stress urinary incontinence.

Following a detailed evaluation, Dr. Muninder Singh Randhawa, Associate Director of Urology and Robotic Surgery at Max Hospital, performed surgery to close the abnormal opening using the surrounding tissues.

Highlighting the complexity of the case, Dr. Randhawa said, “A vesicovaginal fistula significantly affects a patient’s quality of life because of continuous urine leakage. In this case, since the fistula was located near the bladder neck and the patient also had stress urinary incontinence, it was extremely important to address both problems during the same surgery.”

After a three-day hospital stay, the patient showed rapid improvement and was discharged in stable condition. A urinary catheter was kept in place for two weeks. After its removal, the urine leakage stopped completely. During follow-up examinations, the patient was found to be recovering well, with no signs of leakage.
