Chandigarh:- The Supreme Court has reserved its verdict on the ban on bursting firecrackers in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), along with the regulations related to their use. During the hearing, the court observed that it issues directions every year regarding the use of firecrackers during Diwali, but firecrackers continue to be burst despite these directions, and the problem of air pollution persists. The court said that merely imposing restrictions and issuing directions is not solving the problem. Along with ensuring compliance with these orders, it is also necessary to make people aware. The use of firecrackers during Diwali affects air quality in Delhi and surrounding areas.
The Supreme Court suggested that prominent and influential personalities could be involved in awareness campaigns to encourage people not to burst firecrackers. Well-known personalities such as Virat Kohli could convey the message to their fans and the general public to avoid using firecrackers.
The court observed that when its directions are violated every year despite being issued regularly, attention must also be focused on creating awareness to bring about a change in people's behaviour.
Need to ensure compliance with directions
Air pollution in Delhi-NCR has long been a serious cause for concern. The use of firecrackers during Diwali can further aggravate the problem. The Supreme Court has reserved its verdict after hearing the matter. The court's final decision will clarify the next steps regarding the use of firecrackers.
