Sangrur, October 9:- The ‘Saras Mela-2026’, being organised by the District Administration Sangrur in collaboration with the Department of Rural Development and Panchayats, Punjab, began today at Kairon Factory Ground, Patiala Bypass, opposite Yadvindra Hotel. The fair, which will continue until October 20, features stalls set up by artisans, craftspeople and self-help groups from different parts of the country to exhibit and sell products made by hand.
Deputy Commissioner Mrs. Poonamdeep Kaur said that the Saras Mela is an important initiative to promote rural skills and connect artisans’ products with larger markets. She said the platform would provide craftspeople and self-help groups with an opportunity to bring their products directly to buyers. This would help increase their income while also promoting traditional arts and crafts.
The Deputy Commissioner said visitors to the fair would be able to see and purchase handicrafts and traditional products from different regions of the country at one place. She said every handmade product reflects the hard work, skill and cultural heritage of an artisan. Purchasing these products contributes to strengthening the economic condition of rural families.
She added that entertainment arrangements for families and children at the fair include a mermaid show, traditional and modern rides, fun games and a car circus. Food stalls offering a variety of delicious dishes and attractive selfie points are also part of the fair.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (Rural Development) Mr. Sukhchain Singh said that renowned Punjabi singers and artists would present cultural programmes every evening during the fair. He said that, alongside shopping and entertainment, the fair would also give people an opportunity to experience the art and culture of different regions.
The District Administration appealed to residents of the district and people from nearby areas to visit ‘Saras Mela-Sangrur 2026’ with their families and encourage rural artisans, craftspeople and self-help groups by purchasing their products.
