Sangrur, October 9:- As part of the Punjab Government’s efforts under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to develop alternative water sources for agriculture and conserve groundwater, MLA Narinder Kaur Bharaj today laid the foundation stone of an important irrigation project in Haredi village. Under the project, treated water from Sangrur’s sewage treatment plant (STP), with a capacity of 4 MLD, will be supplied to agricultural fields through underground pipelines for irrigation.
On the occasion, MLA Narinder Kaur Bharaj said that a total of ₹166.98 lakh would be spent on the construction of the project, and the entire amount had been provided by the Punjab Government. She said the project would provide irrigation facilities to approximately 121 hectares of land and directly benefit 52 farming families.
The MLA said that using treated water for agriculture would provide farmers with an additional source of irrigation. Besides the potential for increased crop production, the project is expected to save 20 to 30 per cent of groundwater. She said that ensuring the efficient use of every drop of water and conserving this invaluable natural resource for future generations was a shared responsibility.
Addressing a gathering of farmers in the village, Narinder Kaur Bharaj said that the Punjab Government was continuously making efforts to provide better irrigation facilities to farmers. She said projects that use treated water from sewage treatment plants for agriculture would play an important role in promoting water reuse and reducing dependence on groundwater.
She urged farmers to adopt water-saving techniques and make efficient use of alternative water sources available for irrigation. She said that active participation by farmers, along with government initiatives, would further strengthen efforts to conserve water.
Those present on the occasion included Bhupinder Nahil, Vikram Nakte, Sukha Mann, Khushwinder Singh Chiri Coach, divisional- and sub-divisional-level officials of the Soil and Water Conservation Department, Soil Conservation Officer Jaspal Singh, Bhupinder Singh and Manjit Kaur, along with the entire staff and farmers.
