New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Election Commission to accept Aadhaar as the 12th document for the purpose of establishing the identity of a person as a voter during the special comprehensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar.
A bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi, however, clarified that ‘Aadhaar’ was not a proof of citizenship and the Election Commission is empowered to verify its authenticity before including the names of the applicants in the electoral rolls.
The Supreme Court ordered the Election Commission to issue necessary directions to its officers in Bihar in this regard today and listed the case for further hearing on September 15. Senior advocate Rakesh Dwivedi, appearing for the Election Commission, told the bench that this special comprehensive revision of electoral rolls will be implemented across the country.
