Chandigarh, August 27 - Haryana Irrigation and Water Resources Minister Smt. Shruti Chaudhary, while giving information during the monsoon session of the Vidhan Sabha today, said that unlike drains, there is no plan to desilt rivers before every monsoon. However, due to repeated heavy rains and silt accumulation in recent years, the work of desilting rivers was started in the year 2025 as a one-time measure with the aim of increasing the flow capacity of rivers and reducing the possibility of floods.
She said that tenders were invited twice for the removal of about 65.31 lakh cusecs of silt in six parts/villages of Kurukshetra district, but due to non-availability of bidders, these could not be finalized. After this, tenders were invited for the removal of about 60 thousand cusecs of silt in four important parts/villages near the waterways of the bridges. Out of these, about 75 percent of the work was completed in three parts by June 25, 2025, but due to the increasing flow of water in the Markanda river, the work had to be temporarily stopped.
She said that now after the monsoon season is over, a fresh assessment of the amount of soil to be removed will be done and this work will be completed before the beginning of the next monsoon.
