Chandigarh- The wife of AAP MLA Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra from Sanaur today filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking to ensure the safety of her family. Petitioner and MLA's wife Simranjit Kaur expressed her fear that the Punjab Police may conduct a 'fake encounter' against her husband. A bench of Justice Tribhuvan Dahiya has fixed September 23 for hearing the petition.
The petitioner alleged that her husband, who is a sitting MLA of the ruling party, is being targeted for openly saying in front of the media that 'senior officials of the irrigation department misled the state government by allowing the release of water into the river and removal of silt from the riverbed.' The MLA had also claimed that her repeated requests to strengthen the banks of the Ghaggar river were ignored.
Advocates Sant Pal Singh Sidhu and Rajat Dogra, appearing for the petitioner, argued that “the ruling party was so disturbed by the statement of the petitioner’s husband that in a spirit of revenge, the security of the MLA and his family was immediately withdrawn. Not only this, all the SHOs and police post in-charges of his constituency Sanaur were also transferred.”
The petition also alleged that top leaders of Punjab and Delhi were displeased. Acting as a political vendetta, the government on September 1 registered an FIR against Pathan Majra at the Civil Lines police station in Patiala for rape and other offences under sections 420, 376 and 506 of the IPC. The lawyer argued that the FIR was based on “false facts”, although he had been clearly acquitted of such charges in earlier interrogations.
