This was said by senior Congress leader Ashok Mehta. He was paying tribute to former Prime Minister late Rajiv Gandhi along with Congress workers on the occasion of Sadbhavana Diwas, his birth anniversary.
Ashok Mehta said that during his tenure, India made significant progress in education, technological development, and economic reforms. His National Education Policy 1986 promoted higher education, while laying the foundation of the computer revolution in the technical field. Rajiv Gandhi took many steps to promote unity and peace among the diverse population of the country, for which he is remembered even today.
He said that with his visionary thinking, he is considered the maker of modern India. He took steps towards bringing revolution in the field of information technology (IT), telecommunications and science. He is credited with the computer revolution and expansion of telecom network in India.
His works gave India a new identity on the global stage. His government reduced the voting age from 21 to 18 years, which increased the political participation of youth. The Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award, established by the Congress in 1992, is an important part of this day.
This award is given to those individuals who made a significant contribution to peace and harmony. Sadbhavana Day is not only an occasion to remember the contribution of Rajiv Gandhi but it also teaches the lesson of unity to the countrymen.
