Chandigarh- The Post Graduate counseling of NEET PG 2024 at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector-32, Chandigarh, has become a matter of concern due to delays and reported irregularities. After two rounds of counseling were conducted on 27/11/2024 and 23/12/2024, the third round has seen repeated postponements, citing administrative reasons and confusion in interpreting the Hon’ble Supreme Court’s judgment dated 29/01/2025 and additionally the Honorable High Court judgement dated 27/05/2025.
The said judgment held that UT Pool Quota seats(18 in no.) should be strictly filled on the basis of Merit in the NEET Examination and furthermore Institutional Preference (IP)-based reservations, beyond a limited extent, is unconstitutional. Specifically, the Court limited IP reservation to 50% of State quota seats or 25% of total seats. The Hon’ble Supreme Court also issued a clarification on 24/03/2025, reiterating this position and even imposed a fine on GMCH-32 for filing an unnecessary petition.
Despite these clear directions, GMCH-32’s  notice dated 09/04/2025, the Chandigarh Administration proposed to convert and fill all remaining State quota seats which actually pertained to UT pool under the IP category. This move has caused confusion and concern among applicants, as it appears inconsistent and in apparent contempt with the Court’s ruling.
It is worth noting that the latest High Court Judgement dated 27/05/2025 clearly directed the Administration to strictly follow the judgement to fill the UT Pool seats on the basis of Merit in NEET PG 2024 examination, still the UT Administration has failed to come up with the new guidelines for the conduct of 3rd counselling of NEET PG.
In light of these developments, many students and families have expressed apprehension that the process at GMCH-32 and UT Admn may lack the necessary transparency . There is growing concern that the misinterpretation of reservation policies may inadvertently affect merit-based admissions, hanging the career of doctors seeking PG admission in the air.
