Punjab government forms five-member committee to combat drug menace

Chandigarh, February 27- The Punjab government has formed a five-member cabinet committee to combat the drug menace in the region.

The committee will be chaired by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema while New and Renewable Energy Minister Aman Arora, Health Minister Balbir Singh, Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar and Industries Minister Taranpreet Sondh will be its members. The primary responsibility of the committee will be to curb drug menace and monitor the operations of the police and health departments.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann had also formed a state steering committee headed by Chief Secretary KAP Sinha to monitor and coordinate the drug de-addiction and rehabilitation programme. Its nodal officer was Principal Secretary Rahul Tewari.
The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) faced a lot of criticism on the issue of drugs during the Lok Sabha elections last year.
