Bengaluru, September 5 - In the wake of the controversy over making the girl students wearing hijab stand in the sun, the Karnataka government has at the last moment put on hold the 'Best Principal' award to be given on the occasion of 'Teachers' Day' on Thursday to the principal of Kundapur Government Pre-University College in Udupi district till further orders. State Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa said that the way Principal BG Ramakrishna treated the girl students is an issue in itself.
It is worth noting that in 2021, the BJP government of Karnataka had banned Muslim girl students from wearing hijab in educational institutions. Meanwhile, Principal Ramakrishna is accused of making the girl students wearing hijab stand in the sun.
In view of the strong campaign going on against him on social media due to this controversy, the government has put on hold the award to be given to him till further orders. The announcement of giving this award to Ramakrishna was strongly opposed by various political parties and other organizations and people.
Responding to queries from reporters at the Legislative Assembly premises in Bengaluru on Thursday, Bangarappa said though the principal was following government orders, "the way he treated the children is an issue in itself."
