Chandigarh: The upcoming general house meeting of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation is going to be held in a different style this time. Senior Deputy Mayor of the Municipal Corporation Jasvir Singh Bunty has written an important letter to the Municipal Commissioner demanding that instead of passing new agendas in this meeting, the worsening financial situation of the corporation should be discussed on priority.
Jasvir Bunty has mentioned in his letter that in the past several house meetings, proposals worth crores of rupees were passed, but due to the current financial condition of the corporation, tenders could not be issued on those proposals till date. In such a situation, if new agendas worth crores are passed in the meeting this time too, then they will also prove to be futile because the Municipal Corporation does not have the required funds for those works.
The Senior Deputy Mayor clarified that in the current year, more funds were allocated to the Municipal Corporation than before. Despite this, this entire amount was exhausted within just six months. As a result, the development work of the city has come to a complete standstill and the jobs of the employees working in the corporation for years are also in danger.
Jasvir Bunty warned that if the situation is not improved soon and the financial mismanagement within the corporation is not seriously investigated, then the day is not far when the operation of the Municipal Corporation will be in danger and it may have to be locked down.
He suggested that all the councillors and officers of the corporation should call a special meeting together, in which the expenses of the corporation, misuse of funds and mismanagement should be thoroughly reviewed. Also, it should be ensured that in future the use of funds is done on the basis of transparency and priority so that the financial condition of the corporation can be brought back on track.
This initiative of Jasvir Singh Bunty has started a new debate within the corporation. Now it will be interesting to see what stance the councillors and officials take on this issue in the House meeting to be held on April 30 and whether any concrete step is taken towards improving the poor financial condition of the corporation or this issue will also remain confined to papers like many other issues.
