Patiala, May 9 - Assistant Director of Fisheries Department Karamjit Singh has issued an advisory to the fish farmers to protect fish from loo. He said that fish farmers should maintain minimum 5-6 feet water level of fish pond and necessary standards for fish farming including pH 7.5-8.5, water color – light green, dissolved oxygen in water – 5 to 10 ppm, total alkalinity – 100-250 ppm, total hardness – less than 200 ppm and ammonia – less than 0.1 ppm.

He said that fertilizer and feed should not be used in excess of the amount prescribed by the department and should refrain from adding chicken litter. Diesel, kerosene, cypermethrin or soap, oil emulsions can be used to kill unwanted pests in ponds. He said that more fish than required should not be stocked in the culture tank And keep the nets used in fish marketing dipped in 5 to 10 ppm red medicine solution for half an hour. So that mosquito-borne diseases can be prevented. For the quality of pond water, it should be tested from the departmental laboratories And in case of emergency contact should be established with the officials of Fisheries Department.
