SAS Nagar, June 23 - Deputy Mayor of Mohali Municipal Corporation Kuljit Singh Bedi said that the slums removed from Chandigarh are putting pressure on Mohali as a result, and the infrastructure, safety, and sanitation system is in danger due to the increasing slum population in the Mohali area. Mr. Bedi has written a letter to the Deputy Commissioner, Mohali, in this regard, demanding immediate action. The letter warns that if immediate action is not taken, a serious law and order crisis may arise in Mohali.
In the letter, the Deputy Mayor said that while the Chandigarh administration is seen taking strict action against illegal encroachments, the Mohali administration is extremely lethargic and careless in this matter, due to which illegal encroachments are continuously increasing in Mohali. He said that recently the Chandigarh Administration had taken action against illegal slums near Phase 2, after which slum dwellers have turned to many colonies of Mohali like Amb Sahib Colony, Udham Singh Colony, Jagatpura, Badmajra, and other areas.
He said that this is not just a problem of increasing slums, but can become a big challenge in future affecting the lives of common residents due to increasing crime, unemployment, and so on. He informed that new slums have already come up in Badmajra, which points to the seriousness of the situation.
Through his letter, the Deputy Mayor has demanded immediate survey of all slums in Mohali, checking new slum dwellers through police, taking structural measures to prevent new slum dwellers from settling, making monitoring more strict by GMDA and Municipal Administration, and preparing a plan on rehabilitation policy for slum dwellers and making arrangements for legal housing for the needy.
Mr Bedi informed that copies of the letter have also been sent to the Chief Administrator of GMDA and SSP Mohali so that all the concerned departments can take immediate action in coordination.
