Chandigarh: “Medical help is very important in vascular trauma. If vascular trauma is not restored in the shortest possible time, then the chances of saving the injured or damaged limb in road accidents are very less.”
Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, Dr. HS Bedi, Director, Cardiovascular, Endovascular and Vascular Surgery at Park Hospital Mohali, said, “People should know the importance of the golden hour, which means that the first 60 minutes after any accident are the most crucial. If the accident victim reaches the hospital equipped with trauma services and an expert medical team, many lives can be saved.”
Dr. Bedi added, “Over 150,000 deaths and 450,000 injuries were reported in road accidents in India in 2022, many of which involved vascular trauma. Road accidents in India result in 19 deaths per hour, which is 462 deaths per day. Most of the accident victims are in the age group of 25-35 years,”
He said that road traffic accidents are the most common cause of vascular trauma with two-wheelers being the main culprit.
Dr. Vimal Vibhakar, Senior Consultant General Surgery and Medical Director, said that while road accidents have declined by 5% globally in the last 12 years, it has increased by 15.3% in India.
