New Delhi, May 27- The India Meteorological Department (IMD) today said that India is likely to receive above-normal rainfall in June in view of the monsoon season. This rainfall will be more in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Odisha and adjoining areas.
Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences M Ravichandran said that the monsoon core zone is expected to receive above-normal rainfall this season. The monsoon core zone includes Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Odisha and adjoining areas. This region receives most of the rainfall during the southwest monsoon and agriculture is highly dependent on this rainfall.
On the other hand, northwest India is likely to receive normal rainfall, while the northeast may receive below-normal rainfall. IMD Director General Mrityunjay Mohapatra said that above-normal rainfall is expected to be recorded in central and southern peninsular India. It is worth mentioning that this time the monsoon has arrived in South India ahead of schedule.
Normally, the monsoon season starts around May 30, but this year the monsoon arrived in Kerala and adjoining areas only on May 25, breaking the records of the last 16 years. At present, this monsoon is fully active in Maharashtra and adjoining areas.
