Hyderabad, May 18 - A massive fire broke out in a building in Gulzar House near the historic Charminar here this morning, killing 17 people, including women and children. The injured have been admitted to various hospitals.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy have expressed grief over the accident. Prime Minister Modi has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each for the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each for the injured. Meanwhile, the police have registered a case and started an investigation.
The fire broke out around 6:30 am. In the initial investigation, the cause of the fire is being said to be a short circuit. A senior official of a private hospital told this news agency that eight people have been brought dead.
Hospital sources said, "Unfortunately, eight patients have been brought dead to Yashoda Hospital in Malkpet." The deceased include three women and two children, aged two and seven years. Apollo Hospital said in a statement that five people were brought to them, whose bodies were burnt and they had already died.

Meanwhile, DGP Jitendra told reporters that according to initial information, the cause of the fire is being said to be a short circuit. So far, 17 people, including children and women, have been shifted to different hospitals.
He said that the fire has been completely brought under control. Police said that the building where the fire broke out had jewellery shops on the ground floor while the upper floor was occupied by a flat. They said that the fire caused smoke to fill the upper floor and people suffocated. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy also expressed grief over the accident and directed senior officials to provide all possible assistance to the people trapped in the building. The fire department was informed about the fire at around 6:30 am.
