London, July 5 - A 24-year-old Indian-origin man has been jailed for life for the attempted rape of a girl in London and a 'significant' police investigation into the rape by Scotland Yard. Navrup Singh was sentenced to life imprisonment by Isleworth Crown Court on Friday for five charges including rape, which carries a minimum sentence of 14 years in prison, the Metropolitan Police said.
He had previously pleaded guilty to three offences, including possession of an imitation weapon with intent to commit a crime, rape of a girl under 13 and extortion of a girl under 13. He was also found guilty of attempting to rape a woman in west London in October 2024 after a four-day trial at Isleworth Crown Court.
Acting Chief Superintendent Shaun Lynch, who leads policing for the Met Police in the West Area, said: “I would like to pay tribute to the courage of the victims and their families and thank them for their unwavering bravery in reporting these horrific incidents.”
He said: “Today’s sentence is testament to the officers’ in-depth investigation, which has identified a violent sex offender and undoubtedly prevented further harm.” The investigation was launched by his team, who tracked Navrup Singh using forensics, CCTV and witness accounts to build a file of evidence against him. The police investigation was launched after reports of an attempted rape of a 20-year-old woman on October 13 last year.
Singh had been sitting on a park bench in the early hours of that day, waiting for a potential victim. The Metropolitan Police said he was carrying a fake weapon, which he used to intimidate his would-be victim.
