Hansi: SDM Rajesh Khoth said that the ten rupee coin is a legal tender issued by the Reserve Bank of India. There should not be any confusion among the general public regarding this. It is illegal for any shopkeeper, trader or institution to refuse to accept 10 rupee coins.
The SDM said that the Reserve Bank of India has repeatedly clarified that 10 rupee coins are completely legal tender and should be accepted in all types of transactions. He said that many such cases are coming to light in which some shopkeepers refuse to accept 10 rupee coins.
This kind of behavior is not only causing inconvenience to the consumers but is also a violation of rules. He clarified that if any shopkeeper or trader refuses to accept 10 rupee coin, legal action can be taken against him. Strict instructions have been given to the concerned departments in this regard.
SDM Rajesh Khoth also appealed to the general public not to pay attention to any kind of rumors regarding the 10 rupee coin. He said that public cooperation is necessary to keep the country's economic system smooth. Both coins and notes are equally valid currency and their exchange should be done without any hindrance.
The SDM said that if a shopkeeper refuses to accept valid Indian currency (coins or notes), then in such a situation a person can file a complaint as per the rules of the Reserve Bank of India. On doing so, action can be taken against the shopkeeper under Section 489A-E of the Indian Penal Code, which can result in fine or imprisonment.
