Patiala: Despite assurances given by senior administration officials, the administration has failed to provide possession of the 1/3 share of the panchayat shamlat land to the Scheduled Caste (SC) community in Bathoi Kalan village.
Additionally, with the support of a farmers' organization, the illegal occupants of the land have verbally abused the laborers and the SC community with casteist slurs and brutally assaulted them. Due to the non-arrest of the culprits involved in this incident, the SC community, during a large public gathering held at the village's dharamshala, announced a state-level protest at the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Patiala on August 18 as a mark of resentment.
Leaders from various social, political, religious, justice-oriented, and Ambedkarite organizations associated with the Dalit community participated in the public gathering. On this occasion, Ajaib Singh Bathoi, President of the NREGA Workers Front Punjab; Darshan Singh Main, Youth Wing President of Valmiki Tirath Amritsar; Dr. Daljit Singh Chauhan, State President; Raj Singh Todarwal, President of the Jabar Julam Virodhi Front; and Avatar Singh Sahota, President of the Jamin Adhikar Sangharsh Morcha, along with Gurdip Singh Kali Khanna, jointly stated that a few days ago in Bathoi Kalan.
after the auction of the panchayat shamlat land, some individuals from the general category assaulted members of the SC community and humiliated them with casteist slurs in the presence of administration officials at the B.D.P.O. office.
Despite submitting demand letters and holding meetings with administration officials to ensure strict action against the culprits and to secure possession of the SC community’s share of the land, no arrests have been made to date, even though a case was registered against 11 named individuals under the SC/ST Act. Furthermore, the possession of the panchayat land has not been handed over to the SC community, despite the community having already deposited ?11.5 lakh as the government auction fee. The government has failed to ensure the constitutional rights granted to the Scheduled Caste community. This injustice has caused significant resentment within the Dalit community.
They strongly appealed to the entire Dalit community and organizations to participate in the protest at the Deputy Commissioner’s office on August 18. On this occasion, Comrade Hari Singh, Shamsher Singh Noorkherian, Satgur Singh (former Sarpanch), Mukhtiar Singh, Naib Singh, Vikramjit Singh, Sucha Singh, Karamjit Kaur (Panch), Jaspal Kaur (Panch), Deepu Bali, Karan Rajput, and others were present.
