Garhshankar, 7 October (Hari Krishan Gangar):- The Post Graduate Department of Political Science of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Khalsa College, Mahilpur, organised a lecture and field visit on the occasion of International Democracy Day on the topic “Democracy at the Grassroots: With Reference to Punjab.”
Department Head Dr. Tara Devi explained the significance of Democracy Day, constitutional provisions of Panchayati Raj, its functions and financial resources through a PowerPoint presentation. She also highlighted the 50 per cent reservation for women in Panchayats in Punjab and the role of youth.
Following this, around 50 students and teachers visited Gram Panchayat Haveli, Block Mahilpur, District Hoshiarpur, where Sarpanch Smt. Charanjit Kaur and the Panchayat members welcomed them. The Sarpanch shared her experiences regarding the functioning of the Panchayat, the decision-making process and government schemes.
The students asked questions about Panchayat funds, Gram Sabha meetings, the budget, selection of beneficiaries, transparency, digital work and sanitation schemes. The students also gave questionnaires to the villagers and Panchayat members. On the basis of this, they will prepare a report.
